Wild strawberries can be found in many places in Mi'kma'ki. All parts of the strawberry have healing properties. It is used as a blood purifier, a blood builder, it also relieves stomach cramps, diarrhea (both using the root), dysentery and urinary infections. Found in bogs, this plant is common in modern day Newfoundland and Cape Breton. When steeped into a tonic, it is used to treat kidney illness and ca also prevent miscarriages in pregnancies.
(Pakosi):
Cow parsnip is found in fields all over Mi'kma'ki. When it is mashed it is good for swollen limbs. The roots are also used to treat the flu. It is said to ward sickness away when dried roots are hung around the neck. (Pko’kmin):
Also known as cloudberries are a important source of vitamins and minerals. They don't have any really important healing characteristics but they do make really good jam. Wintergreen is commonly found in wooded areas on the forest floor. It is a small plant and the leaves and berries both work good for treating the cold and flu. When steeped it can be good for teething babies. Even today wintergreen is used to make mints, even though technically, its not part of the mint family.

This root is found at the bottom of a lilypad which are found in most ponds. It is used for sore throats and to subdue water infections. (Pako’si): The flower/stem of the water lily. This is used to help colds. It is cut into small pieces and boiled into a tonic, after consumption go to bed and let your body sweat out the cold. (Wisowtakjijkl):
Golden thread is typically found in wetlands and bogs. It can be steeped into tea and used to purify the blood and treat stomach ulcers, diarrhea, colds, influenza, diabetes and fertility in women. It is also used for people with drinking habits. It also works for external sores when mixed with sheep fat and cooled to produce salve. (Tupsi):
Alder trees are found in moist areas. The tree is good for rheumatism, stomach, kidneys, fever, neuralgia and headaches. The inner bark is shaved off, soaked in water with a little peppermint and then applied directly to the head. Wrap towel to keep shavings in place. Replace everyday. (Wijokjemusi):
Cherry tree is found in wooded areas and is distinct with its dark bark. It is used to treat coughs and sore throats. It is typically boiled into a tonic or chewed for sore throats. It can also be boiled to help reduce blood pressure and sleeping difficulties. |
